Research Doctorate is the highest degree of education contemplated in the Italian academic system and is geared for the acquisition of the skills required for carrying through highly qualified research activities in universities, public corporations and private companies.
The doctoral program is a postgraduate academic title, corresponding to the third cycle of higher education in many countries around the world. Was introduced in the Italian University system in 1980 and represents the highest level of university education, as dictated by the Bologna process. In the English-speaking countries, the title is the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.d. or PhD), as recognised by MIUR.
Academic qualification academic qualifications Ph.d., accruing to those who have obtained a doctorate, is corresponding to the title of Philosophiæ Doctor (PhD) in the English-speaking countries, and similar instruments in other countries.

English speaking countries, The Doctor of Philosophy, from the Latin Philosophiæ Doctor, is one of the various qualifications of third cycle, together with more specific and d. (Doctor of Education), D.A. (Doctor of Arts), D.B.A. (Doctor of Business Administration), D.M.A. (Doctor of Musical Arts), Th.D. (Doctor of Theology).
